At Little Stars Day Nursery, all Early Years practitioners have a Level 3 Early Years qualification or above. All staff have an enhanced DBS clearance, Food Hygiene and First Aid Certificate. The staff work hard to encourage and extend the children’s learning and development. The children are all assigned a key person when they start at Little Stars Day Nursery. The role of a key person is to create a special bond between themselves and their key children as well as building a good relationship with the parents. Additionally, the key person will observe their key children, assessing their individual needs and then planning activities which extend the children’s learning and development based on their interests.
We do have students on placement at nursery from local schools, colleges and universities. Students are never left alone with the children.
Deborah – Manager
I started my career in childcare in 2001 where I worked in a local preschool near to my home on the outskirts of York. I then went on to gain some experience in my local primary school where I was employed as a Learning Support/Teaching Assistant, during this time I completed my level 3 BTEC Diploma in Early Years. In 2007 I moved to another primary school in York where I gained further experience as a Teaching Assistant at a higher level. My career then progressed when took on a teaching and assessing post at York college where I was a Course Leader for the Teaching Assistants and was a lecturer on the child studies team, during this time I achieved two qualifications in teaching in the lifelong learning sector. In 2013 I returned to preschool working as a Senior Practitioner and a Play worker then I was promoted to Team Leader and then Deputy Manager, during this time I achieved my play work qualification level 3. Prior to this post as Nursery Manager at Little Stars Day Nursery I was a Nursery Manager at a 32 place nursery in the city centre. My further up to date qualifications include First Aid, Safeguarding, Food Safety, Health and Safety and Inclusion training. I am currently in my fourth year with the Open University studying towards my Degree in Early Years.
Melanie – Deputy Manager
I have a BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development which I completed in 2011. I then went onto further this by gaining a Degree in Early Years and Education Studies in 2014. Whilst at University I worked in the Early Years sector in schools. I also hold an up to date Safeguarding qualification, Food Hygiene certificate and Prevent Duty training.
Jess – Deputy Manager
I have been working in nursery settings for over six years and I have experience working with children between the ages of 0-5 years. I began my career in childcare at York College, where I gained a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development. Following on from this I began working in a nursery until I decided to continue my studies by going to University. Alongside my University studies, I worked in a nursery as supply for three years. In 2016 I graduated from the University of Leeds with a BA Honours Degree in Childhood Studies. I joined the team at Little Stars Day Nursery in May 2017 as a Nursery Practitioner and I was promoted to Deputy Manager in October 2017. In addition to my childcare qualifications I hold certificates in First Aid, Food Hygiene, Safeguarding and Prevent Duty.
Maria – Nursery Practitioner
I hold a BA Honours Degree in Children, Young People and Families which I gained in 2015. I also have up to date certificates in First Aid, Food Hygiene, Safeguarding and Prevent Duty training. Before I joined the team at Little Stars I worked as a teaching assistant in a school.
Louise – Nursery Practitioner
I have a level 3 Diploma in Children and Young Peoples workforce which was awarded in 2014. I am fully qualified in First Aid, Safeguarding, Food Hygiene and Prevent Duty. I have experience working in a range of settings including nurseries, after school clubs and playgroups. I have also worked voluntary at a Brownies.
Vicki – Nursery Cook
I have over six years experience working in catering environments. I currently hold a Level 2 qualification in Food Hygiene as well as an allergy awareness certificate. I also have qualifications in First Aid, Safeguarding and Prevent Duty.
